The start of Pink Floyd's journey into space & experimental rock
Hi my name is Morris Broude,I was born in South Africa in 1954.
Growing up in SA not many overseas artists came here due to the political state of the country.
Ummagumma was the first album I ever bought probally because it was a double album. I first heard in a record store which still had listening booths.. The first thing about the album was the interesting cover
Four picture frames of the band each member in one in a different position.
Released in late 1969 on the Harvest label, sides 1&2 were recorded live, Sides 3&4 featuring solo tracks by all four members .
Listening to sides 1&2 , I felt like it was a soundtrack to a movie, sometimes very quiet & beautiful, sometimes frenetic, noisy and scary. The music sometimes heavy rock, middle -easten, psychedelic, spacey with lots of organ, guitar & drums leading to one's feelings of going into space and at times a quiet walk in the forest.
Sides 3 with Richard Wright playing a track called Sysyphus in 4 parts. Part one being the most listenable. Then Roger Waters doing 2 tracks, Grantchester Meadows played on acoustic guitar with a bothersome fly at the end.
Next David Gilmour playing The Narrow Way in 3 parts. The most listenable of the 4 members with part 3 coming close to the later Pink Floyd sound that we all know.
Then Nick Mason doing The Grand Vizer's Garden Party in 3 parts. These tracks with drum solo will test your patience.
To sum up this album is the start of Pink Floyd's journey into space & experimental rock.
